Laid-back Carson
Valley ripe with courses worthy of sampling
Carson Valley has been historically known as "cattle-country,"
but a recent surge in golf course construction has the area
pulling itself out of the pasture and into the realm of being
a legitimate golf destination.
Most courses in Carson Valley have been built in the past
decade, but locals in Carson City haven't exactly taken to strutting
around in soft spikes -- most still mosey the streets in cowboy
hats, spurs and boots.
The course selection, however, is not so modest.
South of Carson City is the new Sierra
Nevada Golf Ranch, designed by Johnny Miller. The scenic
layout offers panoramic views of the Sierra Nevadas and challenges
golfers of all skill levels.
Venturing deeper into the mountains, Arrow Creek Golf Club
is nestled in the foothills of the Sierra-Nevada's at an elevation
of 5,200 ft.
Other courses worth sampling while in the area include the
Carson Valley Golf Club, the links-style Northgate Golf Club
and Wildcreek Golf Club, a former Champions Tour stop.
The aforementioned Carson City is in the heart of the Valley
and can be reached from the south using I-395. Continuing north
on the same freeway for about an hour to leads to the Lake Tahoe
area, for those with insatiable appetites for the links.
Carson Valley (unlike Lake Tahoe) is open for golf year-round.
Reno and Lake Tahoe are all within an hour of each other, making
Carson Valley a veritable golfing hub. Then again, with an awesome
arsenal of resort and daily fee courses, golfers may find Carson
Valley hard to leave.
